Ichi-bon sushi is a casual sushi restaurant tucked into the heart of Old Montreal on Rue Saint-Jacques. It strikes a balance between affordability and freshness, making it a solid choice for locals and workers nearby looking for a quick but satisfying Japanese meal without the fine-dining price tag.

The dining space is cozy and modest, with a clean, approachable vibe rather than anything flashy or upscale. It’s the kind of spot where you can comfortably pop in solo or with a small group, whether grabbing takeout or sitting down briefly. Staff are consistently noted for their friendly and attentive service, which helps the place feel welcoming in an area that can sometimes feel tourist-heavy.

Menu highlights include combo platters that cover a wide range of tastes, from mixed sushi selections with nigiri and futomaki to bentos featuring chicken katsu and General Tao chicken. There’s also a good variety of rolls like the homemade imperial rolls and salmon boat options, providing enough variety for both sushi purists and those seeking something a little more eclectic. Portion sizes tend to be generous, especially for combo meals, making it easy to get a full meal that’s budget-friendly.

If you’re in the area midday or early evening, it’s a practical spot for a quick lunch or casual dinner, especially if you want something that hits the freshness mark typical of higher-end sushi but at a laid-back pace. The atmosphere leans towards low-key rather than trendy, so it suits those who appreciate uncomplicated dining with reliable quality rather than a scene or spectacle.

Regulars appreciate that the fish tastes fresh and the rice-to-fish ratio is well balanced—details that can make or break sushi—and the staff’s warm approach adds to a comfortable experience. Takeout orders often come with thoughtful touches like neat packaging, making it a convenient option for a meal on the go in this busy neighborhood.

Overall, Ichi-bon sushi fits best for locals craving good sushi combos and bentos at reasonable prices, paired with friendly service in a no-frills setting. It’s a functional but pleasant spot to enjoy some straightforward Japanese flavors while exploring the streets of Old Montreal.

This place is actually really good — the fish is super fresh and the prices are very reasonable. You can’t get this level of quality for the same price anywhere else. The atmosphere is nice, there’s a wide variety of drinks, and the service is really friendly. Definitely worth 5 stars!

Amazing, fresh, yummy sushi for a great price! Miso soup was flavorful, we also had the Dynamite, Volcano, and Superbe rolls, all were wonderful. Very filling for two of us as well, excellent and fast service.

Comfort sushi spot The sushi is amazing, super fresh and they’ve got plenty of options to choose from. Personally love the salmon combo. The place is nice and comfortable, great to take your friends with you. The takeout quality of the food is just as good as the dine-in. My only complaint would be that the staff can be somewhat rude if you don’t tip well.

First time visiting this restaurant. The food is so fresh and yummy. The restaurant is so clean and I couldn’t point out anything wrong. The waitor kept serving us tea and help us clean the table for we spilled the sauce. It was a wonderful experience dining there.

This is probably the best sushi I've tried in Montréal. Plus, it's a very cozy place. It was fresh, well-prepared, copious, and tasty. Also the service was kind and warm. Quality for the price is great. The poké is also delicious, and the kaarage chicken was just perfect.
